What this supplication is
Naming Allah over food — 'Bismillah' — is the recorded practice of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and a daily act of gratitude. The fuller phrasing 'in its beginning and its end' is taught for when one forgets and remembers mid-meal.
When to recite it
At the start of every meal or drink.
Scholarly note· Adding 'Allahumma barik lana fima razaqtana wa qina 'adhaban-nar' is widely taught, though its narration has a weaker chain; the obligatory practice is to say Bismillah.
