How to Read a Birth Chart

The Ascendant (Lagna) is the front door. It shows the rising sign, the house layout, and the whole orientation of the person's life. Ask first: which sign is rising, and where is its lord? The Lagna lord's placement sets the chart's central theme.

Three points establish the personality: the Ascendant (outer self), the Moon sign (inner mind), and the Sun sign (core will). Compare them. When all three share an element or sign family, the native is unusually integrated; when they clash, the person contains genuine inner complexity.

Step through the houses in order, noting which planets dwell in each. The house tells you the department of life; the planet tells you the energy driving it; the sign tells you the flavour. A planet in its own sign, exalted, or in a kendra is strong. A planet in a dusthana (6, 8, 12) works in harder, subtler ways.

Next, see which planets are looking at each other. Jupiter's 5th and 9th drishti, Saturn's 3rd and 10th, and Mars's 4th and 8th connect distant houses — a career planet receiving Jupiter's gaze is protected; a partnership house receiving Saturn's gaze asks for patience.

Combine what you have found into recognisable patterns. Raj yogas, Dhana yogas, Gaja-Kesari — the classic combinations turn scattered placements into coherent themes. Rank them by strength and by whether their component planets are dignified.

A chart without time is a landscape without weather. Look at the current dasha lord (which planet's period is running) and the major transits (Saturn, Jupiter, Rahu, Ketu) against the natal chart. The timing system tells you which house's story is active right now.
