The Ascendant, called Lagna in Vedic astrology, is the zodiac sign that was rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth. It is the single most important point in a Vedic birth chart: it sets the layout of all twelve houses and represents the physical body, temperament, and the outer personality the world encounters.

Why the Ascendant matters

Unlike the Sun sign or Moon sign, the Ascendant changes roughly every two hours, which is why an exact birth time matters so much. Your Lagna determines which house each planet falls in — and thus colours how every planet expresses itself in your life. Two people born on the same day can have entirely different charts if their birth times are a few hours apart.

Think of it as three layers of the self. The Moon sign (Rasi) is your inner mind and emotional nature. The Sun sign is your core will and soul direction.
