Ar-Rahman and Ar-Rahim: mercy before everything

The Qur'an opens: 'In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful' (1:1). Muslim scholars generally explain that Ar-Rahman denotes a mercy that encompasses all creation, while Ar-Rahim denotes a mercy specially directed to the believers — though interpretations of the precise nuance differ.
2A pattern for our own beginnings
If the Book of guidance begins with mercy, our speech, our work and our relationships can begin the same way — with a wish of mercy and good for others. The 'Bismillah' before an action becomes a small daily practice of orienting that action toward Allah.
3Reflection
Before you begin one task today, say 'Bismillah' slowly and ask: how would mercy change the way I do this? Mercy in the details is where character is built.
